1. LET’S START WITH YOUR PASSIONS, HAS IT ALWAYS BEEN BEAUTY OR WAS THERE ANOTHER PATH BEFOREHAND?
Beauty has always been a passion of mine but not what I thought would be my career. When I was younger, I really wanted to work in the social work sector. I thought my career was going to be working for juvenile justice or department of community services. After having my first daughter, my whole outlook on life and my career changed. I am someone who easily becomes emotionally attached to certain things so I knew I would be possibly affecting my home life for my career (if I ventured down the social work sector), so I decided to look for another path and that’s when I was lead to beauty.
2. WHEN DID YOU REALISE THAT STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS, SPECIFICALLY A CLINIC, WAS ON THE CARDS IN YOUR LIFE? NO DOUBT THERE WAS A MIX OF EXCITEMENT AND HESITATION?
I have always been a very independent woman and after having my first child I knew I didn’t want to miss out on watching her grow but I also knew and wanted to get back into work so I chose to work for myself and try build something that would give me both; the flexibility and freedom.
3. IT WOULD BE SAFE TO SAY THAT FEAR IS ONE LARGE EMOTION IN LIFE THAT TENDS TO HOLD US BACK AND STOP US FROM DOING SOMETHING WE DREAM OF. HOW DO YOU COMBAT THIS EMOTION WHEN YOU ARE MAKING DECISIONS TO START ANOTHER BUSINESS OR GO ON ANOTHER VENTURE?
Fear is always in the back of my mind; you wouldn’t be human if you said you don’t ever experience fear at some point in your life. I try and remind myself that if you don’t feel fear you aren’t growing, so I use my fear as my drive. We can live in a life of being comfortable, but will we get to where we want to!? Probably not. I also have the most supportive husband who is my hype man that is forever encouraging me and reminding me that I can do anything I put my mind to, so having this support also definitely helps a lot.
4. YOU ARE GROWING YOUR BUSINESS BY OPENING ANOTHER CLINIC VERY SOON, WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED WITH THAT? AND ALSO, TELL US ABOUT THE CLINIC AND WHAT CLIENTS CAN EXPECT WHEN THEY WALK THROUGH THE DOORS?
Yes I am very excited about this but I am slightly nervous, bringing it back to that fear emotion, I have owned my clinic in Coolangatta now for 4.5 years so I have become comfortable there and everything is so familiar now so the new clinic on the other hand is new, it’s a new suburb, new clientele to build, adding more staff members which means mixing personalities together and hoping they all get along, more expenses and the unknowing of how it actually will go.
However, I am comfortable my team is going to bring the most incredible experiences to anyone who walks through our doors. Clients can expect to be taken on a personal journey of empowerment to achieve that inner beauty and confidence that is within them. They can expect to feel a part of our community and to belong to our GC Skin family.
5. YOU ARE DEFINITELY A WOMAN OF MANY TALENTS AND CONTINUE TO EXPAND YOUR PORTFOLIO! TELL US ABOUT YOUR SKINCARE BRAND COSMOLOGY SKINCARE AND UP AND COMING FASHION HOUSE AMELIA JANE COLLECTION?
Cosmology Skincare’s journey started back in 2018, I wanted to create a product line that I was 100% confident in selling to my clients, I wanted something that was active, and results driven and a product that I knew what was in it. I wanted products that were going to compliment the treatments we offer in clinic but also that if clients didn’t have it in their budget to be in clinic every week that they will still see amazing results from their home care regime.
Skincare is just like the same ratio as dieting, 70-80% is what you consume in food, 20-30% is you going to the gym to exercise. This is the same with your skin and if you have the right products. I was determined to create something perfect and for this reason Cosmology Skincare took me 2.5 years to bring to the market.
For Amelia Jane, this is something completely new to me and a journey I have embarked on with my sister Brittany. Anyone who knows me well enough knows if I could live in loungewear all day I would.
Amelia Jane holds a very special part of both Brittany and I’s heart as our mother passed away in 2019 from cancer and this was our mothers’ absolute favourite attire to wear, you would catch her going to the supermarkets in her pyjamas and just would not care, if she could wear track pants all day long she would. So, when I was ready to start another journey, I wanted to start something with my sister, and I sat there thinking about what is meaningful to us and that’s when we came up with Amelia Jane, a luxury and timeless sleep and loungewear collection. A project where we are constantly feeling our mother’s energy around, so this is very special to us both and we are so excited to see it all un fold and be brought to life.
6. YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ROLE TO DATE WOULD BE A MAMMA, HOW DO YOU JUGGLE IT ALL!?
It has taken some time to try and find balance and sometimes I still think I could do better in this department, but I do my best like any other boss Mumma. I still work full time, but what I try and do now is ensure when I am home that it’s about spending quality time with my babies, on my days off making the most of every minute I have with them. I also have the most incredible team behind me now that allows me to have more of this freedom with my babies. It hasn’t always been like this, but I am one very lucky boss to have the girls I have.
7. AS A WOMAN IN BUSINESS, WHAT ADVICE COULD YOU GIVE OTHER FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR?
My advice would be if there is something you want, just go for it, at the end of the day you won’t ever know if something will work unless you try. Ride the emotion of fear and never look at an experience as a mistake or regret, nothing is ever a mistake, it’s a lesson in life and if you have taken something from that experience then you have grown, you will be more knowledgeable than you were before.
