You’ve heard it, but not sure if it’s a myth or a fact. We’re here to give you the good news that it is a FACT. Botox, or anti-wrinkle injections, is a cure (albeit temporary) for wrinkles and fine lines but it is also a fantastic way to prevent them from becoming deeper and more prominent or even forming. Anti-wrinkle injections are also used to treat migraines, eyelid spasms, excessive sweating and teeth grinding and continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. This is due to it’s effectiveness, the relatively low cost and how fast the procedure is.

So what is Botox? For starters it’s a brand name that is trade marked by a company but most people use it as a blanket term for anti-wrinkle injections. For the sake of this blog we are going to do the same (we also use a brand called Dysport which works in the same way). Botox is made from Botulinum toxins and is derived from a bacteria called C. botulinum. This bacteria can be found in many natural settings, like soil, lakes, forests and in some animals (we’re getting all scientific here). In very small doses, Botulinum toxin is injected to temporarily paralyse muscles. The effects last anywhere from 3-6 months. So think of it this way, if your muscles in those areas aren’t operating for long periods of time like that, then they are less likely to get overworked and make the area produce more or deeper lines. It’s a win win!

“I always prefer prevention verses correction , many people start getting preventative treatment in their 20’s or 30’s their is no magic age. Whilst it’s always preferable to start early before the lines get deeper, it’s never to late to start” – Nurse Jahnelle
The most popular areas on the face to have Botox injections are:
- Frown lines (also known as 11’s and are located between your eyebrows)
- Crows Feet (wrinkles around the eyes)
- Horizontal lines on the forehead
- Smokers lines (lines around the mouth or at the corners)
- Cobblestone dimples on the chin
You can expect to see your results kick in between 24-72 hours, but this can depend on the brand of anti-wrinkle/botox you decide to go with. The longevity will vary from client to client and can be affected by how fast your metabolism is. We recommend beginning Botox from your mid 20’s or early 30’s. This is the age bracket that you will start to see fine lines develop, so get on top of them and prevent them deepening!
